About Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church
Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), located at 500 McKennans Church Road in Wilmington, Delaware, is one of Friendship House’s longest-standing and most active partner congregations. The church has been deeply involved in homeless services across New Castle County for decades, bringing organized volunteer teams, coordinating seasonal clothing drives, and hosting community meals that serve individuals and families in crisis.
Partnership with Friendship House
Red Clay Creek’s partnership with Friendship House spans multiple areas of service:
- Clothing Bank Volunteers: Church members regularly volunteer at the Clothing Bank of Delaware, sorting donations, organizing inventory, and assisting clients during distribution hours. The church also serves as a satellite collection point for clothing donations from the surrounding community.
- Community Meals: The church hosts periodic community meals in partnership with Friendship House, providing hot meals to individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. These meals are prepared and served by church volunteers and are open to anyone in need.
- Code Purple Shelter: During Delaware’s Code Purple cold weather activations, Red Clay Creek Presbyterian has opened its facilities as emergency overnight shelter space. When temperatures drop below 28°F, volunteers from the congregation staff overnight shifts to ensure guests have a warm, safe place to sleep.
- Seasonal Drives: The church organizes annual coat drives in the fall and back-to-school supply drives in August, channeling donations through Friendship House to reach families in need across the region.
