A Legacy of Faith-Based Service

Since its founding in 1985, Friendship House has been rooted in the faith community. Our affiliated churches are not just supporters — they are active partners in the daily work of serving people in crisis. Church volunteers staff our programs, host community meals, provide winter shelter space through Code Purple, organize clothing drives, and mentor families as they transition from homelessness to housing stability.

This network spans denominations and geographies across Delaware, united by a shared commitment to the dignity of every person. Whether a suburban Presbyterian church organizing a coat drive or an urban congregation opening its doors for emergency winter shelter, each partner brings unique strengths to the work.

How Churches Partner with Friendship House

There are many ways faith communities can engage with Friendship House's mission:

  • Volunteer teams: Send groups to staff the Clothing Bank, serve at community meals, or assist with empowerment center operations.
  • Clothing drives: Organize congregation-wide collections of clean, gently used clothing for the Clothing Bank of Delaware.
  • Code Purple hosting: Open church facilities as emergency overnight shelter during winter cold weather activations.
  • Holiday programs: Coordinate gift giving, holiday meal distributions, and seasonal events for families served by Friendship House.
  • Advocacy: Educate congregation members about homelessness in Delaware and support policy initiatives for affordable housing.
